Nintendo-classic in the bargain bin?!?! Shock-horror!!!

Oooo, finally, a Nintendo-published classic at a great price! This is my first foray into the Metroid franchise (shame on me...yes, yes, I know...) and I can really see why everybody gets so excited when one of these gets released (similar to a new Mario or Zelda-game). Having played my fair share of FPS-titles on the PC using mouse/keyboard combination, I was worried how this, dare I say, superior control set-up would translate onto the Wii-remote, and I am happy to admit that it works really well! After adjusted to the most sensitive setting in the controls-menu (recommended), I adapted quite easily to the new control scheme. Motion controls for grappling and handling objects work well most of the time, while aiming and moving the camera using the Wii IR pointer is smooth and responsive. Not a big fan of platforming sequences in FPS-games, but the double-jump implementation does save you major frustration in most cases. Everybody here has already mentioned the slick presentation and lovely visuals, so I won't go on about it myself, just to say that the art direction, specifically on the different planets, is truly top-notch. Happy that Nintendo decided to fully record voice-overs for this one (something I do miss in other Nintendo games like Zelda). Some of the sound-effects can be a bit cartoony (not fitting with the general serious tone of the game) while others are a bit boring and repetitive (default blaster weapon sound effect during a big battle just seems to drone on instead of adding to usually climactic battles). What I do want to mention specifically is the fusion of exploration/blasting/puzzle-solving into one cohesive style of gameplay that somehow seems to work marvelously here and can be extremely satisfying to figure out or pull off successfully. Truthfully I have gotten stuck on several occasions so far, either how to progress or how to beat a tough opponent, but a quick flick through my trusty walkthrough puts me back on track (so if you prefer your hand to be held by your video game entertainment, you might be put off a bit). But considering the now budget price, there is a lot of bang (or laser zap, in this case) for your buck here (I've been playing for over 15 hours and only completed about a quarter of the game...mmm, maybe I'm not as good at FPS as I imagined...). Would love to try the trilogy-package, however, this is still a good buy on its own especially at this low price.

Superb showpiece but ultimately a little unfulfilling

I recently bought a Wii after long deliberations between it, a PS3 and an XBox. As a one-time hardcore gamer who had since, erm, grown up and had less and less time for games, I was overjoyed to find hardcore, gorgeous-looking games do exist on the Wii.

Metroid Corruption is nothing if not a showpiece for the Wii, a satisfying confirmation that, while the Wii may be weaker, it can still compete in the hardcore stakes. To that end the game looks gorgeous, the environments delightfully crafted, with a lot of variation from planet to planet.

But unfortunately I just got bored of the same weapon for too long. The original Metroid Prime was always taking a risk with this approach, and I was always a little surprised at the universal acclaim it - and its two sequals, this being one - received, despite that. Alas, I couldn't quite get over that; as someone used to Wolfenstein, Half-Life et al, I foundit dull. Yes there are upgrades, yes there's hyper mode, but there's still too many occasions early on where you're mindlessly blasting foes with your weak zapper, just waiting for them to absorb enough hits from it to finally die.

The alternate fire isn't satisfying at all. Shooters long ago abandoned "hold fire to charge up and release a big energy ball"-style attacks as they were dull, moved too slowly to have any chance of landing and left you prone while charging.

Another niggle is the crosshair is frequently difficult to keep track of amid the melee of battle, and there's many times you don't know where you're shooting.

The controls are another problem. The Wiimote works generally well for aiming, but there are occasions when it sticks to the screen edges, a problem if taking on multiple foes. And since it also controls looking and turning, it takes an age to turn Samus round. There is a sensitivity area in the options menu which, er, doesnt' let you adjust sensitivity at all, merely change between control schemes.

Overall, a good showpiece, but the initial feel-good of seeing your Wii act like its more powerful competitors turns to unfulfillment. Perhaps this is why the next Metroid, The Other M, will be more 3rd-person and action/adventure than FPS...

Best shooter on the Wii

I've not found a better shooter on the Wii; a must have if you like shooters and own a Wii.

Great FPS

This is a great FPS. The controls are amazing and I like all the little puzzles you have to work through. It is not very linear but that is a plus since you have to roam a little and get to know the place you are on. I rate this game very high with the Wii controls wich are fun. The sound in the game is also very good and Samus does not dissapoint this time around. I would recomend that people buy the Metroid prime 1,2 and 3 in the same package wich cost the same as one Wii game. All games are great and with the Wii controls even more great.
