Boring, boring, boring

I was bought this as a present and have invested some time in it. However, I have had to give up on it after about 12 hours in total. It is so boring it is painful. Nothing much happens, the character just spends forever talking very woodenly to boring individuals. I am yet to do any fighting or exciting game type stuff.

Fable 2 is much, much better. Avoid this tedium.

An eternity of immersive gameplay, the definitive RPG for the next generation consoles...

Now first this must be said, the negative reviews are either from people who didn't give it a chance, are halo/cod fps fanatics hating the fact they have to think for themselves or people who don't care about story, versatility, adaptability, freedom, music, basically everthing that makes a brilliant game...

Now I got my chance to rant (yay) here comes the real review:

You start out in a confined, sheltered and yes protective but limited vault. And of course you want to escape! Except its partly you dads fault (isn't it always), and without spoiling the game for future players, your dad seems to be willing for you to irradiate yourself or danger yourself in th name of science.
The vault isn't as bad as some say, quite a few things to collect in there, but really if you haven't escaped aftr an hour you will be feeling emmense claustraphobia. However the feeling of final escape is the best feeling of freedom and flier you will ever experience in a game, and from this point onwards the world is your (the lone wanderers)infinitite exploration and adventure.
Th first town your most likely to find is a place called megaton, and here is a prime example of great ai, voice acting, design and 50's sci fi post apocalyptic culture! Throughout all of the game and continuing I have felt countless emotions towards the ai and espicially a lonesome ghoul bartender called gob who I recommend you trying to find a background history on!
In fallout 3 there is no one story being a bethseda project there is a thousand other quests or adventures to be found in the wasteland. And each one is amazing, infact I didn't do the main story until after 100 hours into the game.
Gameplay mechanics are wow, wow and more wow. Vats especially, this is the system in which you can freeze time, target selected body parts of weapons, enter slow mo and you aim directly at that with intense blood and gore. Normal shooting is brilliant, handles perfectly, it's standards are of halos class.
Supplies, ammo, weapons, unique weapons, armor are of the many things you will discover, at first ammo is scarce, so this time every bullet does really count. But soon you will loot slot and nver really struggle with supplies of ammo except maybe .44 ammo, they are pretty scarce all through the game, alien power cells too and of course the weapons which use these are some of the best, and it just adds to the enjoyment. Also medical equipment is found and needed, also you can become a junkie to these so watch out ;) weapons and armor are everywhere and in large variety. From a scoped pistol to a miniture nuke catapalt to a flaming motorbike engine powered blade.
The enviroment is my faverite part of this game, a wasteland full of mutations to an innocent civilization of little children. You feel alone and uncertain yet excited and anticipated for this nuclear disaster is a completely devolved world, and it feels partly possible... My faverite places in the mall which includes th Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, the capital building etc all in ruins hehe, sinister fun lol.
Now for the enemies!!!! My faverite would be the Yao gaui, fast agile strong mutated enemies, more ready than the games infamous deathclaws. You will encounter 100's of enemies and be overwhelmed and excited by each one. The enemy ai is amazing, each enemy has a real life not just a picture on a screen. Also enemy effects are outstanding, get a sawed of shotgun shoot a feral ghoul in the head and watch it fly :))))

Wow.

Wow. This game is brilliant. I enjoyed it from start to finish. After I completed the normal game, I couldn't resist buying a DLC. I bought Broken Steel. It was by far the best one. But this is a review of the main game so I won't get into Broken Steel, and the other DLCs.
Good points:
I thoroughly enjoyed roaming the wasteland, with my dog, Dogmeat.
The best feeling you get from this is running through the Metros, with an army of Ghouls chasing you. You're running out of ammo, and you can hear the Ghouls shrieking behind you. And you are genuinely frighened, because the brilliant music sucks you in.
I loved the karma aspect of the game. Because you can get known as an evil sod, or basicly Jesus.
And I also loved the companions.
The main story was intense. I loved it. It's starts with you as a kid in 'Vault 101'. 'Vault 101' along with other Vaults, were cities underground which the goverment built before the nuclear war. And you often see posters saying 'Reserve your spot today!'. But when you grow up, your dad flees the vault. And you escape after him. Thats the main story of the game. But I cannot tell you what happens at the end, because that is only the outcome of my game and there can be loads more outcomes. Which tells you how vast this game is. And how anything can happen.
I like the survival(ness) area of it.
Bad points:
It's not really a shooter, you find yourself hiding when you've used up your 'AP'. Waiting for your A.P to recharge again. AP is used for V.A.T.S. V.A.T.S is basicly a huge advantage over your opponent. You slow down time to pick an area of there body to try and hit.
I can't think of much more. It's that good! A must buy for anyone!

No car this time but no matter.

You are a survivor of a nuclear halocaust, living in a fallout shelter, or 'vault' where no one enters and no one leaves. One day your Dad dissapears. What do you do?

This is all the game starts you with. From there on after it is up to you. Are you an evil ruthless killer? Or a helpful stranger? Even with these two choices there are many sub-choices. Do you kill people with a baseball bat? Or with a gatling laser cannon? Do you help people to help themselves or do you give away your posessions to those who need them most?

Any choice you could make in the real world, you can make in Fallout 3. These days nearly every game offers some kind of moral element where you can be good or bad. No game though offers it in the depth that Fallout 3 does. Fallout 3 uses Karma. In other words, what goes around comes around. So if you are good, good things will generally happen and vice versa. But there is a twist. If you are an agent of the light be prepared to fend off random encounters of evil mercinaries who despies your goody-two-boots. You can also walk the fine line of neutrality, balancing your good acts with your evil ones.

The NPC's in the game will also respond to this. Certain people will not speak or interact with you unless you are evil, neutral or good.

I think this is just brilliant because it means the game becomes personal. It may even show you what kind of a person you really are.
On the note of personal, Fallout 3 brings a human element that I have yet to see in any other game. This is not least helped by the superb voice acting. It is flawless, witty, and sometimes very twisted and emotional.

Fallout 3 also displays incredible game length that offers a lot of re-play oppertunity. There are over 100 locations to visit and discover as well as countless NPC's to talk to. The main story line is engaging, unique and almost makes you feel as if you are in a movie. It is not repetitive and offers new challenges with each mission or task. I would guess it at at least 24 hours game playing. Do not rush it though, the essence of Fallout 3 is to explore everything as you will find hidden jokes, clues, extra items and all kinds of things.

Aside from the main story are a number of side quests. This too are varied and incredibly engaging and probably provide another 24 hours game play on their own. These tasks take you around the Wasteland getting to know the survivors and the dangers.

The best stories to me are the ones that put you down but bring you back up again. The ones that make you cry but also make you laugh. Fallout 3 has that. You may find yourself saddend or shocked at certain things, but then others will make you flat out giggle (I remember in Fallout 2 you could run into the 'brotherhood-knights of camelot' who were searching for the holy hand grenade; expect this kind of parody humour in Fallout 3). There are dozens of cultural references and clearly a lot of thought and time and effort has gone into the story.

The imagination in this game is exaclty what I look for and it's almost un-rivaled by other games.

The game play itself is great too. Fallout 3 combines First Person Shooter with Turn Based Combat. Whilst it's not strictly turn based you can effectivly pause the game and target specific body parts with the V.A.T.S. (Vault Assissted Targeting System). Whilst you may think this takes the challenge out of the game as the computer aims for you, this is not so. Your accuracy depends on your skill points and level, wether you are moving, standing, crouching, what weapon...any number of things. You may also wish to ignore V.A.T.S. and stay completly in first person.

A lot of the skill comes in chosing the right tool for the job. If you are a melee fantatic a sniper rifle is of no use obviously. A great element to the game is how stealth is used. As in real life it is influenced by light levels, movement and noise as well as line of sight.

All this means you can be anything you want to be. A stealth assassin or an in your face minigun-slinger.

My favourite part of Fallout 3, as maybe one or two others may be, is Dogmeat. Man's faithful companion. Fable II is to my knowledge the only other game to feature a dog companion. However in Fallout 3 your dog is mortal. So be careful.

So in summary if you are a First Person Shooter guru do not expect anything to rival Call of Duty, not that Fallout 3 claims to. If you are into Role Playing and decision making and enjoy strategy, a challenege then Fallout 3 is definatly for you. The game does not spoon feed you, it is not an easy run through and the solutions to objective often require a bit of brain power.
It is in essence a Sandbox game. You can go anywhere and do almost anything. So for those who like the non-linear then prepare to leave the safety of the vault.

Fallout 3 - Amazing!

This has to be the best game i have ever played! (my previous faves were final fantays 9, silent hill 2 and zelda: ocarina of time - and some of those have been faves of mine for over 10 years but this one blows them all out of the water!)

To start with, i dont usually like 'shooting' games, but fallout 3 to me is more like an RPG but the character happens to use guns, a sin the gaeme world you have to in order to survive (you can also use other weapons, but its mainly guns). I played oblivion: the elder scrolls before this and really enjoyed the huge land you had to explore and the way that you can pretty much do anything you want and do the main/side quests in any order you want rather than it all being decided for you like a final fantasy or zelda game (which is what i was used to in a RPG.)

I actually got given this game to borrow by someone (then they sold their 360 and let me keep it!), so i didnt decide to buy it and to be honest when i first played it i thought "meh" and thought obvilion was better, i just didnt 'get' this game, as soon as i was out the vault i would just die whenever i encounterd and enemy and had no caps to buy anything or heal myself... and i thought the game was too difficult..... i was however amazed by the world the game was set in, almost desert-like or where there were buildings they were crumbling and thought it was a nice change to oblivion's lush forests and organised civilisation.

Then i stopped playing the game and went back to oblivion for a while.. when i got bored of oblivion i went back to fallout and attempted to go and do the main quest (i was at megaton at this point trying to find my dad via colin) and then by the time i completed that quest i began to feel more confident with the game, and started to make some caps which made a big difference, then i discovered how to repair items and get some decent armor and then i stopped dying all the time.

I also almost gave up again when i was trying to get to some places in the DC ruins and was puzzled when there was a pile of rubble in the way.... it took me a while to realise that you need to go underground to reach these places via the metro system! after i discovered all these things and started exploring and doing some of the side quests i began to realise how truely amazing the game is.

As of now, i have been playing this game for 80 hours and have finished all side quests and finished the main quest yesterday - i have just ordered the GOTY edition (so i can continue playing) this had to be the longest time i have spent playing a game, though some final fantasy games in the past have come close, but there is still so much to do with this game when i get the extra content

Now, i want to address something here, alot of people on here who have given the game 1 or 2 star reviews i feel didnt give the game a proper chance, i faced difficulties when i started which made me forget about the game for a few weeks, but i persisted and tried again - i went thorugh a phase of thinking the game 'wasnt that good' but that was because i didnt understand fully how it worked - now i have spent 80 hours playing it and know how everything works i can say it was been the most enjoyable gaming expeirence i have ever had, i have bought other games in the meantime that i havent even played because i was still hooked of fallout 3.

Anyway, to summarize, if anyone tells you this game is rubbish, its because they didnt understand how to get the best out of it, be prepared to spend a while getting to grips with it, and once you start levelling up and getting perks and forming your own character you will enjoy it more, i didnt even use V.A.T.S at first as i didnt even know i could do it, but now i use it all the time, little things like that will have a big impact on how you play the game and if you enjoy it or not.

1 last thing to end on, the game world is massive and very datiled - they could have got away with making the game smaller/less detailed than it is, then you have the metro tunnels giving you access to parts you can't normally get to at ground level, you have the DC ruins, capital wasteland and many interior places and buildings to expolre and various caves and tunnels to raid, what i love about this game is how indivdual it is, die to the karma system and when you speak to someone you always get several options of what to say and you can make the game 'your own' and be a good or evil character, and also your skills and perks make the character individual, and you could play the game through and select different options and have a totally different experience - this is the most involved i have ever felt when playing a game! buy it!
