This is probably my favourite driving game. The simulation is realistic, responsive and great fun to play. The graphics are colourful and crisp and look even better in HD. It is only a single player so not one to play with your friends, although the Online Live! play is ok. But, the huge stock of vehicles and the variety of race types make this game very entertaining and one that I keep coming back to. Colin McRae was a legend – and this game is his treasure!

Product Description

Colin McRae: DIRT is the most diverse and exhilarating off-road racing experience ever with sensational gravel, mud and dirt events the world over. Events include the series` intense point-to-point races and takes players further off-road than ever before.

Race in challenging heavyweight 850bhp cars, drifting on the loose gravel and high-speed blind corners of Hill Climb events along perilous cliff edges. All 12.4 miles of the world famous Pikes Peak International is included, with over 150 precarious turns to negotiate through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

How about engaging in multiple car races with Dakar-style trucks and super-powered 4x4s on the toughest desert terrain in Rally Raid competitions? Then there are Rally Cross events, switching between dirt and road racing, where the competition is always tight, fast and collisions with your opponents are inevitable. Colin McRae: DIRT also offers a dedicated mode for European, International and Global rally championships featuring official 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD rally cars.

Colin McRae: DIRT delivers the wheel-screaming exhilaration of off-road racing with the next generation of the series` sublime car handling and physics system and a devastating new damage engine that ensures players experience every bump in the track, every loose rock, every inch of shifting dirt through the reactive environments.

With an incredible range of off-road vehicles, thrill-packed tracks, modes that make the most of online multiplayer, and more varied events than any other single-championship rally game, Colin McRae is a bigger, faster, wilder racing experience.

Pretty good fun

I haven't played a rally game since I had a Sega Megadrive so the immediate impact of the lush graphics on the 360 were an obvious surprise. The actual gameplay is fantastic with the many different types of terrain offering skill challenges to suit all styles of driving. Progression through the career mode draws you in and engages your attention to push you on to the next round. The physics are very good and you soon get the idea that you are actually driving on the surfaces presented to you on each stage. The different skill levels will please novice drivers up to the more competent pros but the car setup options can seem very daunting because there are a hell of a lot of them to get tangled up in. I actually found that you don't really need to change them all that much to be able to complete the stages in fast times, although I can see they will come into play on the higher skill settings in order to top the time sheets.
The stages where you race against other competitors at the same time can be extremely frustrating because some of the vehicles you race are large and the tracks are quite narrow, so overtaking can be more like just pushing someone out of the way rather than being able to overtake cleanly. However, if you're not bothered too much about this it's a lot of fun.
The different in-car (or out of car) views can also add a different dimension to the way you play each stage and the changed perspectives are well presented. The vast amount of vehicles on offer is quite amazing and after playing for some time you can actually tell they all drive very differently. The fact that you have to earn enough prize money to buy certain vehicles to use in different stages is a good idea but I found it a little too easy to earn enough money. The co-driver notes are pretty much spot on but not totally all the time, which I suppose is something real rally drivers experience sometimes anyway.

Over all this game's very good value for money now it's a lot cheaper and you'll rack up many hours of gameplay (and crippled thumbs!). If you're a fan of driving games (especially rallying) you'll probably enjoy this one.

Fantastic rally game

I originally played this game on a mid range PC and thought it looked a bit disappointing in places. However now I have played it on my XBOX 360 in high definition, I take it all back. Some of the tracks are a little featureless but many look great. The cars also look terrific. It plays so much better, smoother and faster on the XBXO.
There are loads of tracks and options and a good difficulty level, being able to play it on one of 5 levels. On the lowest level, damage is low and terminal damage is off so it is pretty easy. You really want to play on a higher one.
There are also loads of race options, including the usual solo racing. However there are plenty of race types, where you are race other cars. I don't mind solo racing, but I prefer to be up against others.
It's not all perfect though. I found some of the cars quite hard to control, but I suppose that is part of the difficulty of the game. However it is a bit annoying when you have to battle hard to keep the car straight. I only really found this on one of the race types, cant remember which one. The rest were fine.
Commentary, such as it is, is a little repetetive and annoying at times, though it doesn't really impact the race, so it's not too much of a problem.
Apart from these few gripes I love it. Buy it together with Sega Rally, which looks even better and has a much more arcadey feel, and you have a perfect partnership.
Don't buy it on the PC unless you have a very powerful machine. Get it on the 360 or PS3. Roll on Dirt 2
