Review

All in all was a very good game very much like the old castlevanias except for a magnetic skill obtained quite early in the game that becomes vital for a lot of the gameplay, great storyline except for ending wont go into anymore details wouldnt wanna spoil it, at times the game required you to grind a bit because otherwise youll die quite fast but great game great story 4/5

Satisfies my Castlevania Addiction

Another solid Castlevania game, harder than usual I find. Only complaint is the small scale of some of the mission based levels, literally only 10 rooms to a level at times. But the addictive gameplay, cool music, great art style are still there and a new weapon system brings something new to veterans. If you're new to Castlevania start with Dawn of Sorrow though, that's the real deal Castlevania on the DS, then you will be hooked and buy the other two great games.

great fun but at times a little confusing

plays great on the dsi xl, the bigger screen really helps, this must have been murder to play on the smaller ds screen, great graphics and sound , i still wonder how nintendo manage to get all of it into that little cartridge

Classic CV with a twist!

The game handles well, there's a lot of replay value. The music, sprites and gameplay are excellent. The boss fights are tough enough until you get into the swing of it. My only criticism of the game was that the end fight can be too easy if you cheese your glyph combinations!

Building up the town and recovering villagers is interesting and adds a bit more depth to the game. The variety of glyphs is interesting expecially the ones which turn you into a creature - this adds a whole new dimension to the game.

If you like action/rpgs/adventure games try it. If you liked the old castlevania games try it!

The series high point has arrived

This is the third in the DS Castlevania series and personally I think it's the best offering so far, arguably out-doing the Saturn/PSone classic Symphony of the Night.

Castlevania games often stick to a very similar formula of exploration, combat and levelling up, and this one is no different. There are a few tweaks to the combat formula that provide a satisfying level of variety to the experience. Enemies now have clear strengths and weaknesses to certain weapons meaning that equipment changes are necessary and frequent. However rather than having to wade into the main menu each time you fight a new enemy it is quick and easy to change what weaponry you are using and you can set up three preset configurations to switch between. This requires more dexterity from the player but also keeps the gaming experience fresh and entertaining, without interruption to the flow.

The approach to Ecclesia is quite different from previous instalments from an adventuring perspective. Instead of just having one castle to wander through you're taken through several varied and more compact locations before taking on the lair of Dracula himself. Dracula's castle is smaller in comparison to previous games but it is still sizeable indeed and it will take a significant portion of gaming time to get there in the first place. There is also a village that you can visit to complete various side-quests, buy items etc... It's all very RPG-lite but is a welcome touch all the same, providing a sweet respite from the exploring and combat along with added longevity.

Ecclesia is definitely the most graphically impressive of the DS series and the changes in location give the developer plenty of scope for providing varied artistic styles and settings throughout the adventure. Whilst some are fairly generic there are certainly others that make impressive use of the hardware. The smaller areas also provide a much tighter level design along with a great degree of enemy variation

There is plenty of scope here for players who wish to explore all elements of each level, getting the best weapons/equipment etc throughout the game and this is certainly the best way to glean great enjoyment from it. However it is also possible to just play through at a swift pace albeit provided with a tougher (but still doable) challenge due to not levelling up your character.

Overall, this is a high point for the series that manages to change the right things to keep the formula from going stale. It's just unfortunate that it probably wont sell well due to shop shelves being crowded by the latest Nintendogs or Brain Training with this probably hidden away in a corner (if even stocked at all.) I do highly recommend seeking it out though and it's 100% essential if you like your Metroidvanias.
