Excellent rally racer
This game makes a good first impression with a nice clean graphic style and solid framerate. Car handling is also very good indeed. I don't like simulator physics like grid where you have to break every corner and all that. This game has more arcade handling which is a relief and i appreciate the ease of control. In fact i just let go of acceleration before a steep turn. New cars can be bought and upgraded by using money earned as you go along. First few tracks are very simple but variety comes soon enough as you progress.
Bad points are the emo rock soundtrack which tends to repeat the same song often and you can't tinker with the playlist at all.. Trackside scenery can be a little bland with iceland being the least interesting place to go to. The stunt levels are a pain especially since current new challenges have to be completed to progress so you often have to repeatedly do these fiddly stunt tracks to pass with a minimum score but their hard and really no fun at all. Thankfully there arn't so many of them so at least theres that.
The DS does'nt have too many stand out racing games and we've all had Mariokart a long time now so this makes a nice change to play.

Wonderful & awesome Rally-racer for the worlds favourite hand-held!
OK, lets get right down to the core: Collin McRea Dirt 2 is a 3D rally-game of the finest brand, and no mistake! I`ll doubt you will find any non-cartoon driving game of this high quality any place else than here, for the DS.
CodeMasters appears to have based themselves on using an improved graphics-engine of the sort they used to make GRID:racedriver 2, and they have come of even better this time!
I`have also played DIRT 2 for PS3, and taking into account the fact that The DS is a portable console, and one that offers many different hardware capabilities (like two screens, touch sensitivity on the lower screen, voice recognition, blowing-sensitivity), rather than optimizing the machine for just graphics (making it weaker than the PSP when it comes to this), DIRT 2 DS comes out with nothing to be ashamed off!
Graphics are very well indeed for car-models, and you can choose from and open up; rally cars, pick ups, buggies and many other types of offroad-cars. There are lightning effects, and the shade on the vehicles differs with the surroundings! And the Buggies are really detailed and wonderful to look at. The game runs totally smooth, and almost never slow downs. You also got a fair sense of speed, and huge tracks! The vehicles are authentic & licensed: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota and more... And, hey: its a dream to play! You really feel whether the vehicle is fast or heavy, or whether the grip is good or loose. And its really satisfying to control the cars. Its easy to learn, and lots to master. There are many types of vehicles, car-damage,upgrades. and types of events/races/missions. And there are three difficulty levels to choose from, not at the start of the game, but a the start of every single race-event. The harder you set the game, the more money you earn. At the start of the game you got only one or two vehicles, but as soon as you finish off events, you unlock items. Background graphics are maybe not that impressive at the start of the game, but as you proceed it becomes fantastic!The background are very varied; often beautiful & idyllic countrysides, sometimes special indoor/under roof-offroad-circuits , sometimes hot Ethiopia, while at other times chilly Iceland. It`s wonderful to see how they keep on pushing the DS-hardware, and also to see just how good DS-graphics can actually look.
However, the price has been to decrease the number of cars you race against. There only 4 opponents, but I think personally that Codemasters have made the right decision, as the 4 opponents are intelligently programmed, and can offer a real challenge on Pro-difficulty. You can drive against other human players, using single card download, or a more extended version with multicard wi-fi play.
You can view the car from behind or within, both function very well, but of course its cool to see your own car.
There is a track-editor here (as it were on Create & Race, and GRID, also from Codemasters), making the game last for a really long time.
Music is great! Sampled rock-tunes, some of them a actually quite catchy. You got performers such as: Black tide, Blakfish, DIe!Die!Die!, Eagles of death metal,MSTRKRFT, White Denim and more...(although they should have included The Prodigy..as they did on the PS3-version)
The sound is really good, but it will not make an impression unless you use headset.
Overall this game is a winner. probably the best driving game for the DS, second only to Mario Kart DS. But its a little unfair to to compare the two, as Mario is a cartoon-franchise with lots of fantasy-battle-elements, while DIRT 2 is about the kind of driving that is done in the real world. The conclusion is: this is a must-have for any DS owner that enjoys driving games. Go get it!
