VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!

Don't even go there, a really big let down for me, I've done lots of PC & Wii motor racing and rallying games and this is the worst. Car handling is rubbish, graphics uninspiring, game play just nonsense. Definately a NO. I think Colin McRae would have been disappointed to be associated with it (compared to the others which were associated with him before).

OFF ROAD RALLYING

Get a life losers!! Every time that I read a review on here, all most people do is moan how hard it is to play: too hard to control, too hard to grasp, too- coz you are too lazee, maybe? This gaMe is FANTASTIC- the weii wheel works fine, it is intense, and you havbe to work hard to keep that buckin' motor on the track. Great fun, and yeas, it is hard, becoz, smell the coffee reviewers, they MAKE it look easy on the telly, but they work HARD to drivce those cars at those speeds. THis is a realistic video game, so -doh! - codemasters are going to make it hard to play!!! sheesh, you people.

Realistic Rallying

In my opinion this is a realistic attempt at a rallying game.

The cars are meant to be difficult to master, and they are - well, at least to certain extent. Initially it is very frustrating as the car is almost never on the track, but once you have started to get a feel for the controls then things start to get better. As you also start to learn the tracks then things get better still as you work out how to get round the corners and obstacles quickly - dare I say it even at full throttle.

Watching your performances through the replay function will give you an insight into what you are doing wrong - and watching the computer controlled cars will give you an idea of what you need to do to go fast and stay in control e.g. you almost never have the wheel steady and straight for longer than a fraction of a second as you are always correcting for slides, bumps ...etc - watch those front wheels on the replay!

The only drawback with the controls is that you can't vary the amount of throttle, so its either pedal to the metal, or nothing. This makes the restart from the side of the road after a crash a little tricky at times - handfuls of opposite lock being the order of the day .... saying that, it does make doughnuts really easy to do!!

Learning the tracks is very important as the obvious shortest route is not necessarily the best - bumpy ground really comes into it here as the cars are in the air a lot of the time and, realistically, can't be steered while airborne. Hopefully I haven't put people off with making it sound too difficult - if it's any consolation my 7 year old son wipes the floor with me on this, although I'm better than him at Formula One 2009!!

If you want a challenging driving experience then this is likely to be for you - if however you want a simple kiddies racing game then you probably need to look elsewhere - Mario Karts maybe.

No excuse for such graphics even on Wii

I bought this game despite reading other people's reviews which were generally negative, I wanted a decent racing game for the Wii and not a cartoonish Mario Kart. Having been used to PC racing games of the Need for Speed Genre, I wasnt expecting high end graphics but they were indeed disappointing as everyone else commented.
If you can live with the bad graphics then you would atleast expect decent gameplay but even that is bad...The trick to controlling the car is using the Nunchuck otherwise the game just does not offer any decent controls using only the Wii-mote.
The tracks are ok-ish but generally I would only play it if I didnt have any other platform (like the PS2 or xbox)

Woeful

I've not played any of the other Colin McRae games, so I can't comment on how it compares to these.

On the plus side the handling of the cars seems fairly realistic and the races are decent fun. However, I think it suffers immensely from being ported to the Wii (having seen the PS3 adds). The worst thing is that the frame rate appears to drop to a noticibly jerky level for about 60% of the game, this isn't really acceptible for a console in my opinion. The constant change in frame rate also spoils the nice handling because you have to anticipate the changes in game speed. Combine this with the fact that the grapics look barely PS2 quality and just 4 cars a race as well and there's not much excuse.
