Confused

Having had some good experiences with some of the first games in the series, I thought I'd give this a bash. Wish I hadn't. This game is all over the place- it seems like it wants to play like a 3rd person shooter, but does not give you the controls to play it that way. Stop to shoot/swing knife? Really? The players handle like trucks and while slow, accurate aiming might be useful as a couple of zombies trundle down a dark corridor towards you, in the middle of an open town with 20 or so running after you, it just does not work for me.

Still, there's a demo, so people can try it out for themselves - and that's what I should have done - tried before I bought it.

Enjoyable

I find this game very good as i am big fan of resident evil series its got things on the game that keep you occupied such as upgrading guns finding bsaa emblems and my favourite mercenairies but the only thing me not giving this game 5 star is sheva you're new partner in the game i find the ai with her is fairly dodgy as you have to give her youre ammo a lot as she wastes it very quickly and the script for what she says is pretty stupid as well as she points out things which you already know, overall very good game but not as good as resi 4

Mixed Nuts

The slow controls do detract from the fun somewhat but they add to the tension brilliantly. Well worth the moneyyyy.
Although I do find the controls quite infuriating in versus mode.

Judge it in its own right, not compared to the earlier Resident Evil games

There have been a fair few reviews on here which compare the game unfavourably to some of the earlier Resident Evil games, which is fair enough - it doesn't have the suspense or depth of plot of Resi 4 in my opinion, but that doesn't make Resi 5 a bad game in its own right! I found the game good fun and engaging.

You get to run around some graphically great levels, using a variety of weapons (from pistols to shotguns, rifles to tasers, grenades to rocket launchers) that you can upgrade (oh, the fun to be had when you reach the zenith of the unlimited ammo upgrades). The enemies are more intelligent than the usual zombies you'd expect, which adds to the interest of this game, and some of the bosses are pretty scary / challenging. There's also the re-appearance of a few characters from Resident Evils of yester-year.

Resi 5 has moved away from the more realistic backpack space management for items you can carry around (Resi 4 differentiated between the sizes of items e.g. a large gun takes up more slots in your bag than a grenade); now you have 9 spaces to fill - fill them with what you like, regardless of size. Personally, I find this easier to use (less thinking required), but it may bother some.

The graphics are good; the cut scenes are put together well. Character wise, the animation is fluid and you can unlock different costumes for Chris and Sheva, if you're interested in that kind of thing (Chris does look like he's been put on a diet of high protein foods and steroids since his last outing, though). The characters are more emotive / animated, and the voice acting... well voice acting was never the strong point of Resident Evil anyway.

Both my other half and I are avid gamers. Short of buying two consoles and two copies of a game, there are very few games which we can actually play through the main story co-operatively, rather than the fairly limited 'versus' or battle modes games developers provide as a half-hearted acknowledgement that online isn't the only way people want to game together. So big, big bonus points to Resident Evil 5 for providing an offline, local co-op option for the story mode.

All in all, a good looking, fun 3rd person shooter zombie fest and the additional modes provide a nice 'side' to the game.

Chris Redfield has arms the size of trees.

Great game. Although not as tense as others in the series.
Fun to play with friends, if not a little frustrating to have to rely on them to help you through the levels.
