Product Description

BioShock is a revolution in the shooter genre that will forever change the expectations for the FPS. Going beyond "run and gun corridors," "monster-closet AIs" and static worlds, BioShock creates a living, unique and unpredictable FPS experience. BioShock is the Shooter 2.0.

After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn.

  • Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival.
  • Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment.
  • Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities.
  • Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience.
  • Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.
  • Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture... or save them?

Boring, Messy and Overrated As Hell

After hearing so much great feedback for Bioshock I bought it and didn't even have high expectations for it. But this game is one of the worst I have ever played, I honestly don't know whether I was playing something else to those who said this was amazing...

There are 2 good things about this game; the story (although begins to turn seriously complicated and messy about half way through), and the setting (the city of Rapture is interesting for the first 10 minutes). But that's it. Even the story is absolutely filled with plot holes to deem it just ridiculous, I mean there are parts which make no sense at all.

The rest is of the game fails in every sector; the graphics are below average, the gameplay is boring, repetitive and unoriginal, the controls are clunky, confusing and unresponsive, the voice acting is abysmal, there is no replay value, etc.

I traded it in for the superior GTA: Episodes which is just excellent compared to this crap. Definitely rent it before considering to buy it.

Bioshock Review

A great game. Bioshock 2 came out which made me look at the the first one, which i'd missed. Very glad i decided to give it a go. Gameplay is fun. It's built using the unreal engine, and looks fantastic, the water effects are excellent and some of the effects used later in the game are great. The plot keeps you on your toes too; It's got lots of scary bits, bits that make you jump, bits that make you think about your actions, there are a lot of very good cut-scenes. Definately buying the 2nd one!

good game but over-rated

At the risk of going against the grain, I wasn't overly impressed with this game. Don't get me wrong, it is good, I just don't see what the fuss is about. There are many other games that I would say are better than this one. I may be a little biased as I have never really been a fan of first person shooters so the fact that I like this at all is a minor miracle. Hopefully I will justify my views below:

Good points:

The use of plasmids is the main thing that separates this game from other FPSs and in this regard I agree it was a great addition. The different powers to acquire adds a nice depth of strategy to how you defeat various foes. That being said, I did end up using the electroshock and wrench combination most of the time!
The story: now I don't think anyone can argue that the story in Bioshock is very very good, by any game's standards. The way that the overall story that is fed to you by contact from various characters is nicely supplemented with audio diaries that you find along the way. It can be a bit confusing but it all becomes clear eventually!
The graphics are very good in some places and average in others, water is done particularly well and in a game where the plot is set in an underwater city, this is a definite plus!
The morality system is a nice touch, this manifests itself in whether you choose to save or harvest the little sisters you get from killing the big daddies. This at first seems like a fairly pointless choice but it does end up making a big differece and your choice directly effects how much currency you get to power up your abilites and later on in the game, your level of power is a big issue! It also effects the ending of the game.
The main fun to be had I think is the shear number of ways you can accomplish a task, which is very rare in FPSs. You can go in all guns blazing and see what happens or you can be more strategic and use the environment e.g. shocking the water your enemy is standing in to save ammo or hack various gun turrets/sentinels to protect you. I prefer the strategic route as just shooting becomes very boring after a while. This can be achieved using a combination of the environment, different plasmids/guns and also different ammo types for different enemies. The biggest example is fighting big daddies, you really need to have a strategy with those guys!

Right, now to the not necessarily bad points but reasons why I don't think this deserves it's god status amoung games:

The gameplay gets very repetitive, even with the option of using turrets, plasmids etc. It basically boils down to some mundane task like finding a certain object, flipping a switch etc and along the way you have to clear rooms of enemies. I could only play the game for short lengths of time per sitting before I got bored.
The general difficulty of the game is an absolute sod. At first you start off experimenting with different weapons until you eventually find that just whacking them with a wrench after electrocuting them will finish off most of the base level enemies. This takes all the fun out of having multiple weapons when most of them aren't as effective as a simple wrench. You reach a point in the game about 3/4 of the way through where even this strategy doesn't work and you have to pump a single enemy full of an entire clip of armour piercing rounds from a tommy gun to kill them, it's ludicrous. I realise that the game has to increase in difficulty the further on it gets to even out the upgraded powers but come on.
I hate the fact that in most cases, there is no way to defend yourself. To be fair, I hate that about all FPSs and what I mean by that is that your only option is to stand in front of enemies and shoot them, if they don't die by the time they get to you, you get hit! Even heard of putting up your gun to block someone coming at you with a knife mr main character? Nope? Ok then.

All in all, this game is definitely good but there are only a few little aspects that separate it from other FPSs and for this reason I don't think it is worth the hype. It is still worth buying and you will probably enjoy it, especially if you like FPSs in general but I would not expect the awe-inspiring experience some have described.

Now to sit back and wait for the comments saying I'm a heretic and must burn in hell for not licking the game's boots.
